Białystok is a city located in north-eastern Poland, serving the function of the capital of Podlaskie province. It is the administrative, economic, and academic centre of the region which, due to its exceptional environmental assets, has been termed the Green Lungs of Poland.

The location in the environmentally clean region, full of tourist attractions, as well as the rich infrastructure of Białystok, makes the city and surrounding area a great place for living, recreation and development of tourism.

Białystok has evolved as a place which is the melting pot of different nations, religions, cultures, customs and traditions, where the occidental rationalism meets the oriental mysticism. It has become an example of the integration of ethnic and religious groups, a meeting place for Poles, Byelorussians, Jews, Lithuanians, Germans, Russians and Tartars. The multiethnicity of the city was the reason for the Białystok-born Ludwik Zamenhoff to start his work on the universal language of Esperanto.

The location of Białystok, in the proximity of borders with Belarus, Lithuania and Russia, as well as the convenient transportation links, create excellent conditions for developing economic and cultural contacts with the countries of Eastern and Western Europe.

Podlasie is worth coming here for many reasons. Some of them are beautiful nature and untouched environment.

A great valor of the region is its biggest biodiversity in Europe. Numerous walking, cycling, automobile and kayak trails enable visiting the most picturesque places. Certainly, one of them is marsh valley of Narew river along with Narew National Park.

Also worth visiting is Knyszyńska Primeval Forest Scenery Park characterized by diversified terrain and numerous (approx. 440) well-heads and streams. Water sports and fishing lovers can go to Siemianówka levee. Winter sports lovers can also find something interesting for them. There are good ski trails around Supraśl and in nearby Ogrodniczki one can ski downhill and use a ski-lift.

There are also numerous monuments with picturesque landscapes in the background. Characteristic for our region are various wooden objects like small churches, orthodox churches, crosses or wayside shrines. Towns like Choroszcz, Supraśl or Tykocin have had an unchanged urban set up for centuries.

Many fields of folk art have survived in the Poviat, such as smithery, pottery, plaiting, wood and metal sculpting or lace-making. Folklore tradition has been cultivated by numerous folk bands and ensembles. Gminas of Białostocki Poviat, besides leisure and recreation, offer summer resort building development areas, tourist and border crossing service, storage room, production halls and area for agricultural food processing.

Everyone who wants to breathe fresh air and who is looking for peace and quiet and picturesque places will find something interesting and will be given a warm welcome by local people.
